Windows XP Tips and Tricks
I do not provide support for these tricks so please only attempt if a experienced user. 5 new tricks every week so check back on Mondays weekly to see the new ones.
How to Remove Windows XP's Messenger
Theoretically, you can get rid of it (as well as
a few other things). Windows 2000 power users
should already be familiar with this tweak.
Fire up the Windows Explorer and navigate your
way to the %SYSTEMROOT% \ INF folder. What the
heck is that thingy with the percentage signs?
It's a variable. For most people, %SYSTEMROOT%
is C:\Windows. For others, it may be E:\WinXP.
Get it? Okay, on with the hack! In the INF
folder, open sysoc.inf (but not before making a
BACKUP copy first). Before your eyes glaze over,
look for the line containing "msmsgs" in it.
Near the end of that particular line, you'll
notice that the word "hide" is not so hidden. Go
ahead and delete "hide" (so that the flanking
commas are left sitting next to one another).
Save the file and close it. Now, open the Add
and Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel.
Click the Add / Remove Windows Components icon.
You should see "Windows Messenger" in that list.
Remove the checkmark from its box, and you
should be set. NOTE: there are other hidden
system components in that sysoc.inf file, too.
Remove "hide" and the subsequent programs at
your own risk.
Disable Error Reporting
(you don't need it)
1. Open Control Panel
2. Click on Performance and Maintenance.
3. Click on System.
4. Then click on the Advanced tab
5. Click on the error-reporting button on the
bottom of the windows.
6. Select Disable error reporting.
7. Click OK
8. Click OK
Keyboard shortcuts
When speed counts, the keyboard is still king.
Almost all the actions and commands you can
perform with a mouse you can perform faster
using combinations of keys on your keyboard.
These simple keyboard shortcuts can get you
where you want to go faster than several clicks
of a mouse. You'll work faster on spreadsheets
and similar documents, too, because you won't
lose your place switching back and forth between
mouse and keys.
Here are some of the most useful keyboard
shortcuts:
Copy. CTRL+C
Cut. CTRL+X
Paste. CTRL+V
Undo. CTRL+Z
Delete. DELETE
Keep your Computer Updated
2. Click Scan for updates to find out about recent releases for your system.
3. Click Yes when prompted to install any required software or device drivers. Notes: To open Windows Update, click Start, then click Help and Support. Under “Pick a task,” click Keep your computer up–to–date with Windows Update.
Trick : To determine the amount of RAM you'll regain by disabling unnecessary system services, use the Windows Task Manager. Here's how: Before you disable any system services, reboot your system and don't launch any applications. If you have applications that automatically load when you start Windows, hold down the [Shift] key to bypass the Startup folder. Then, right click on the task bar and select Task Manager from the shortcut menu. When you see the Windows Task Manager dialog box, select the Performance tab. Now take note of the Available value in the Physical Memory panel. After you disable those system services you deem unnecessary, reboot your system in the same manner and compare the Available value in the Physical Memory panel to the one that you noted earlier.
